How to get rid of roaches – Covington Termite and Pest Control

At AmeriTech Pest Solutions, here in Covington, Ga., we understand that cockroaches are probably the number one pest that grosses people out when they find one in their home. People don’t even like to say the word “cockroach”.  They use other words like “palmetto bug” or “water bug”.

Cockroaches come in lots of sizes and colors, but the ones we mostly deal with here in the Southeastern United States are the smoky brown cockroach, the German cockroach, the Oriental cockroach, the American Cockroach and the brown-banded cockroach.

The most common ones we see here in the Covington area are the large, dark-colored smoky brown roaches and the small, light to medium brown German Cockroach.

Smoky brown cockroaches live outside in mulch, ivy, leaf letter and woodpiles. They enter homes underneath doorways, through cracks and around windowsills, pipes, vents, louvers and eaves.

Once they get inside they can reproduce and eventually establish a thriving population in your home.

The small German cockroach lives in homes, grocery stores, warehouses, etc.  They are transported from one home to another in paper bags, luggage, clothing, cardboard boxes, etc.  In many cases they come to your home from the grocery store!

What can you do to keep cockroaches out of your home?

The following are some good tips to help you prevent a cockroach infestation:

  • Seal around all door thresholds, pipes, vents, cracks, louvers and eaves.
  • Keep garbage outside in containers with tight fitting lids.
  • Keep kitchen clean. No food left out on counters or food scraps on the floor.
  • Keep all cereals, rice, bread, oatmeat, etc. in Tupperware or other tightly sealed container.
  • Don’t leave pet food out all night.
  • Don’t let ivy grow up on or near the house.
  • Don’t stack firewood within 10 feet of the house.

Cockroaches can be controlled using a variety of weapons, including sprays, granular baits, bait stations, dusts, aerosols and gel baits.  It is very important that you know what you are doing when using these products.  If you don’t you will not only waste a lot of time and money and still have a growing cockroach population in your home, but you may risk harming yourself, a family member or a pet!
