How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs
Did you know that a 2015 survey showed 93% of single-family homes had bed bugs? Not just a common issue for sleazy dead-end motels anymore, bed bugs can become a major problem for your household.
What are some of the top ways to get rid of bed bugs? Keep reading to find out the best tips to deal with an infestation and how to keep your home bed bug free.
Thoroughly Clean Everything
The first thing you need to do is take any of the items that may be infested and seal them in plastic bags. This process will stop the bed bugs from spreading to your furniture and other rooms in the house.
The next step is to take all the items and wash them in hot water. Then, dry them on the highest heat setting if possible. This heat should kill the bed bugs that are hiding in the material.
If a box spring or mattress has bed bugs or eggs that are visible, you’ll need to use a vacuum cleaner to get any that may be in hard to reach places.
Follow this up with a high-pressure steamer on the mattress and box spring and any bed bugs in your house should be vaporized.
Bug Proof the Room
The first step in bug-proofing your room is purchase mattress and box spring encasements. This encasement will eliminate any chance of the bed bugs re-entering your bed. However, if you can’t afford the encasements, there are still simple steps you can take.
Bed bugs love to hide in nightstands, items under the bed, and the walls of your bedroom. You need to find a way to keep your bed from coming into contact with any furniture or walls in your room.
Anything under the bed should also be removed to prevent a way for the bed bugs to climb into the box spring. If you have a bed skirt or long sheets, make sure to tuck them in, as they are a perfect entry point into your bed.
Create a Defensive Barrier
Once your bed and any infested articles of linen have been cleaned thoroughly and treated, it’s time to put up a barrier to keep the bed bugs out of your house for good.
The best option? Pick up an insecticide and spray any potential hiding spots for the bed bugs. These hiding spots include the crevices in your walls, the covers of your electrical outlets (front and back), lamps, furniture, dressers, and in between the box spring and your mattress.
Once this spray is applied, the bed bugs won’t be able to penetrate the barrier!
